Yesterday, I finished cleaning up the manuscript for Pretenders, as phase one of getting the document ready for the publisher. It will now be proof read by wonderful, willing members of the First Expansion and their corrections input prior to its delivery to Brian Hades of Edge Science Fiction and Fantasy at ConVersion in Calgary this August.
Pretenders, Book #3 in the Okal Rel saga, features POV characters Amel,Ayrium, Di Mon and Ev'rel. The central question of the plot is who will fill the empty throne of the Gelack empire. The personal challenge for the characters caught up in that struggle is how to sustain a false front, when their true selves are always threatening to burst out. Amel, raised a commoner, wants to survie as a highborn. Ayrium must make friends at court to protect her home. Di Mon must swear to whoever will keep the empire strong, despite his personal inclinations, and juggle his feelings for the Reetion, Ranar. Ev'rel puts on a "Demish woman" act to keep the support of Silver Hearth. Everyone is his/her own worst enemy in maintaining false fronts, even before their plans are scrambled by the outcomes of duels and the awakening spirit of a legend.
Amel SnippetAmel was speechless. A wife? A princess? he thought. Just like that? All the places inside him that ought to react to a thing like that felt numb. Ev’rel patted his hand. “Close your mouth, dear, and don’t fret. You can thank me later. Now I must go back to my guests. Can I trust you to behave until you are sent for?” He nodded. It seemed the only way to get rid of her. |

Anne M. Stickel, author, editor, illustrator and member of the ORU's First Expansion, recently became the Chief Editor of Black Petals. Way to go Anne! Another of Anne's recent successes is placing her story “Honeymoon in Hayel” with Tales of the Talisman for publication in fall 2007. On the art front, she illustrated Damien Kane's BP #41 tale, "The Secret of Cedar Creek". Anne is also managing copyeditor for the space opera bimonthly e-zine, Ray Gun Revival. Anne has been a supporter since Paul Strickland introduced her to the Okal Rel Universe way back around the time that Throne Price came out.

Isn't this lovely? It's one of Alison's versions of the rel symbol. Part of some background rumblings about revising the Okal Rel Universe homepage.
Had a lovely e-mail from ORU First Expansion member, awesome sports woman and avid reader Lisa O. this morning, sharing her reaction to Righteous Anger with me. See excerpt below:
... I think rugby should at least have a warning label.
I'm really wishing I was a Sevolite as I would regenerate!

I got RA in the UNBC bookstore saturday. I'd finished it
by sunday night, even with eating, sleeping, visiting the
beach, playing rugby, and another book for a mental break
halfway through. Maybe a total of four hours.
It was goooooood! I loved it!
Thank you Lisa!

Okal Rel Universe enthusiast and Lynda's young friend, Mel, earned her flight jacket yesterday for helping to spread the word about the Okal Rel Universe on places she frequents on the web that Lynda would never have found in a million years. Thank you Mel! And fly carefully.

I got befriended by FenCon (in Dallas Texas) on Twitter. I think. I've set up Okal Rel accounts on facebook, myspace and twitter. Still a bit befuddled about how to use each them properly. :-) But delighted to be poked, nudged, whatever by con organizers on any social computing site any time!
Thanks to Mel, we now have an entry for the Okal Rel Universe on the Zillapedia ... which I never knew existed until she discovered it. :-)

Okal Rel Universe believers everywhere extend thanks to Ronald Hore for his review of Righteous Anger on CM Magazine. Just discovered the review this morning but it came out in the June 2007 edition of CM. CM reviews "Canadiana of interest to children and young adults, including publications produced in Canada, or published elsewhere but of special interest or significance to Canada ... " and the reviewer ranked Righteous Anger as suitable for children over the age of 13. Although written as adult entertainment, I've been delighted to find the books appeal to bright, imaginative young people. It is good to have a reviewer of children's books give Righteous Anger his attention. The best part, for me, was his conclusion: "Warning, it is a complex tale so you will have to pay attention; you can't just skip your way through it. If you do take the time and are a lover of the fantasy/science fiction genre, you will be rewarded." And the RECOMMENDED status he gave it, of course. :-)
