Ordnance, ordinance
 
Sometimes you come across a word you were never quite sure of and find out there's a reason: there are two words with similiar spelling and -- if not exactly similiar meanings -- at least meanings apt to crop up in the same sort narratives.

a) an authoritative decree or direction b) a public enactment, rule, or law promulgated by governmental authority
