Quantum Leaps In Terrace

Lynda Williams keynote speaker at Quantum Leaps in Terrace, B.C.

Delighted to be keynote speaker at Quantum Leaps in Terrace, B.C., Nov 29. I'll be talking about how studying science and technology can lead young women into creative places, like writing science fiction, with lots of meaningful work and exciting stops along the way.

Pregnant Nersallian, or maybe Vretla, by Richard Bartrop
Big thank you to Richard Bartrop for the sketch, here, of a pregnant Nersallian ... or maybe it might be Vretla Vrel as she appears in The Courtesan Prince. I liked the face, for Vretla: strong, just a touch feline. Richard is awesome. :-) He's doing the cover for the third Okal Rel Universe Anthology. Click the detail from the picture, above, to see the whole picture in the gallery.

Visit to Elizabeth Woods' Class

Lynda Williams speaks about the Okal Rel Universe at Elizabeth Woods' class Nov 2007 A sample picture from my appearance, today, in the classroom of Elizabeth Woods, one of the authors in the ORU Anthology 1 and a member of the First Expansion. Enjoyed the questions! More pictures of this, VCON and Sentry Box launch soon.

Righteous Anger and Okal Rel Universe Anthology 2 launch at Sentry Box Nov 2007 So much to report about the launch at the Sentry Box in Calgary Nov 10, I haven't been able to figure out where to start, so picked my best group shot of the event. At the front are myself, Sandra Fitzpatrick and Randy McCharles on the panel. John Preet was up there too, but took this shot. I stayed with my publisher Brian Hades who came out to the event, as well. I have pictures of Brian and other interesting members of the audience, which I will dole out here and on the ORU website. It was grand. Much thanks to the Sentry Box (wish it was in Prince George, what a store!) and to Sandra, John and Randy for the big parts they played in making it happen. John Preet is editor of the 2nd anthology. Authors Randy McCharles and Sandra Fitzpatrick appear in it.

I am working up to a report on the Sentry Box launch in Calgary, honest, but my preliminary rummaging is turning up stimuli I have to blog. Just sent a message to the First Expansion list pointing out the article by Tatjana Chorney called Interactive Reading, Early Modern Texts and Hypertext: A Lesson from the Past.

And before I forget them, here's two catch phrases to go with the article in connection with feelings about the Okal Rel Universe phenomenon:

  • It has to be real (about the art, and the people-people bonds behind it)

  • The message spans all media (about the means of the ORU's expression)

Apologies to those to whom the above is incomprehensibe. I am making sense of it as it go, myself. But it feels good.

Author Lynda Williams mentioned in RAHI newsletter In 1991 I had the privilege of working for the summer in Fairbanks Alaska as computer tutor and B.C. government observer of the Rural Alaska Honors Institute (RAHI), an excellent program for introducing high achieving students from small native communities to life at the Univeristy of Alaska, Fairbanks, campus. RAHI has a policy of following the lives of all its students and instructors, down the years, and keeping in touch. This update on my fiction publications appeared in a page of their newsletter recently. Thank you RAHI and best wishes!

Visit from a Reader

Visit from reader who appreciated Courtesan Prince, at the Hades home in 2006 This is one from the summer of 2006, which I fear I failed to share at the time. I remember the visit with pride and pleasure. It was one of the first times someone did me the honor of making an effort to drop in and "meet the author" because she had enjoyed my books. She is a friend of Anita Hades and a librarian, as I recall. Must get her name from Brian Hades (the tall gentleman publisher at the right). I'm the one on the left, and my daughter Tegan is the youngster.

Okal Rel Universe books on sale with other EDGE titles at World Fantasy Con 2007 Much thanks to author Nathalie Mallet for snapping this picture for me at World Fantasy Convention 2007 in Saratoga, New York, Nov 1-4 2007, showing ORU novels Courtesan Prince and Righteous Anger on sale along with other EDGE Science Fiction and Fantasy Publishing books. Robert Sawyer made this possible for EDGE, as I understand, for which -- thank you the incomparable Rob!

Worlds of Lynda Williams CD

Worlds of Lynda Williams CD

Here's a scan of the cover of the Worlds of Lynda Williams CD created by First Expansion member David Glenn Anderson. The picture of me is in the background is rather out of date but entirely right for the period of my most creative phase of invention in the Okal Rel Universe. I lived in the ORU then. I hope it brings others as much pleasure, for a moment now and then, through the books.

Portuguese-Brazilian anthology including Luis Filipe Silva

Luis Filipe Silva says:

It's a mixed Portuguese-Brazilian original anthology of fantasy & SF short stories. It's called (translating to English), THROUGH UNIVERSES WHERE SAIL WAS
NEVER SPREAD BEFORE (hommage to Camoens and a famous line in its epic
Lusiads: "Thro' seas where sail was never spread before").

Luis is an author for Okal Rel Universe Anthology 3, which we hope to have through integrity edits by early in the new year so it can move on to copyediting with editor Jennifer Sparling, and be in the production phase before Pretenders is out in the Fall.

Reading for the Future
David Glenn Anderson reports my care package of Okal Rel Universe books have arrived, and will be added to RFFUtah's inventory of science fiction materials to spark the imagination of teachers and students, or be donated in the RFF cause in whatever capacity David Glenn decides to use them as a member of the First Expansion. Dave will sign and annotate the books, at the my request, to give each one a history or provenance, so future owners will know how they got launched into the world and be encouraged to add their own jot to the record.

provenance

The history of the ownership of an object, especially when documented or authenticated. Used of artworks, antiques, and books.

Book Nook Nov 5

Forgot the camera again, for which I should be lashed with a wet noodle as the saying goes. Had a great stint on the Book Nook yesterday. Thank you CIRAC and particularly Andrea Palmer, CIRAC co-ordinator. Sold out the copies of Righteous Anger and Courtesan Prince I had in stock for the event; donated a book to the Handy Circle; met Bruce Dean from Burns Lake who bought a copy of Courtesan Prince for his son, Paul, and got an e-mail from Bruce this morning which looks like the ORU may have made a new friend in that quarter. Bruce Dean is a musician who was selling music books on the booth beside me.

Michele Dube at VCON 2007 in Vancouver with author Lynda Williams FINALLY getting at some of the pictures I took at this year's VCON in Vancouver. That's VCON 32, for the record. This shot features a new friend, Michele Dube, who is just getting to know the Okal Rel Universe. I enjoyed a chat with her during a quiet moment. She certainly deserves a "Rel Pilots Make Dock" postcard for the eye surgery and associated problems she has been through recently. I am selfishly glad she can see well enough, again, to read about Amel, Ann, Horth and all the ORU gang.

Scrollinspace online community journal managed by Dr. Dee Horne I was one of an intrepid group of diverse readers and musicians performing at the UNBC coffee house last night, with intermittant competition from a loudly buzzing light in the Atrium. Enjoyed it all more than I had anticipated! Not that I don't usually enjoy listening to readings, but the short-and-many format worked well and it has been a long time since I got the chance to sit in the audience at the arts scene. I showed off Righteous Anger and Okal Rel Anthology 2 as well as reading from YA fantasy work in progress, from my new Fanga Stone series. Much thanks to Dee, who MC'd, read, and sold copies of Rebecca Bradley's Lateral Truth, for throwing the gig. Writers - check out her innovative creation, Scrollinspace, online.

The line up last night included: Dee Horne, Mike Stanyer, Lisa Dickson, Kevin Hutchings, Brenda Koller, Jay Lewyn, Ann Tiffany, Jeremy Stewart, Rob Budde, Adam Pottle, Tonia Mills, Justin Foster, Ken Belford, Si Transken, Lynda Williams and Bud Baldry whose short reading from Chapter 11 of his novel-in-eternal-progress about the life of a skinny insurance salesman was delightfully funny. Ken and Si are always uplifting. Appreciated Si's poetic tribute to the unsung and underpaid women of the social services world and Ken's encounter with a grizzly, so remarkable for being an ordinary run-in between beings who share a world - or in this case a tent. Always have a soft spot for Robert Budde's "Poem" poems, about how a poem would contend with the world as a character in everyday situations. The "poem" poems, as this series is known, highlight how bizzare so-called normal experience is, in the face of "poem"'s inquisitive, meaning-conscious efforts to interact. Jennifer Lott, my daughter, attended and remarked to me afterwards about Adam Pottle's story of securing a Barbie doll to photograph for the cover of his chapbook. Missed Dee, Lisa and Mike's readings because I have to run off to do a driving chore for family. Maybe next time! Came back in time to catch Kevin Hutchings' last William Blake song on the guitar. Always had the image of Blake as a dry, bible-thumping type for some reason so hearing about his musical side and some of the Blake quotes Jeremy Stewart favors, has been an education on that front. Kevin reminded us it is Blake's 250th anniversary this year and there are celebrations all over the world to commemorate his life and work.
